Non-Fiction and Spelling Resources

First, I'm attaching the Spelling Menu graphic that you can open and choose an activity from in case you lose the paper and can't remember an activity. :)

Secondly, I'm posting the words that your child has been learning when reading non-fiction books. They will be taking a quiz over these words and definitions but they will be using their books that have the definitions to answer the questions.

Lastly, I'm going to upload a ppt slideshow tomorrow we used to teach the kids about Early Cypress so you can see what we've been learning. Have a great night!

Happy Tuesday! Week's Reminders

Hi all,

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend. Teachers were up at Lamkin getting ready for three fun, hardworking weeks until Spring Break. I'm excited to say we have some fun Language Arts activities coming up!

Homework Help:
Due to the week's late start the following assignments are due Friday.
1) Reading Homework with story on the Grand Canyon. Students are working on underlining the sentence that has the answer to the question in it. I hope they will consider this while doing the reading assignment.
2) A spelling activity from the menu. (I'm working on creating a jpeg photo file of the spelling menu for you to post each week.)
3) Writing cancelled due to shorter time.
4) Home reader cancelled due to shorter time but please consider reading any that you currently have. 2 signatures get a sticker to earn prizes, 10 signatures earns a trip to the treasure chest.

Weekly reminders:
Friday is Go Western Day. We'll be performing at 9:45am in the gym. I believe you can park in the back and walk straight into the gym without having to show your license but please bring it just in case!

Learning Goals:

Reading-We're wrapping up our study of non-fiction text features. I'm working on posting those in a jpeg format for you too this week!

Writing-We're continuing our work on non-fiction writing by making a "magazine" with organized writing on a topic of our choice.

Social Studies-We're wrapping up our study of Early Cypress and moving towards the symbols, battles and influential people of Texas!

Once we teach the majority of the lesson we'll be making some videos to post about non-fiction and kids reading their writing but I'll need some extra time to learn about posting :)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I hope you had a lovely day. We had a fun time passing out our valentines this afternoon. Thank you to each and everyone of my 44 Valentines this year! And thank you to those of you who provided special treats!!

Language Arts WRITING homework is cancelled for this week! We've had some problems with copies and it's already Wednesday tomorrow so we'll just continue next week. :)

I'll post pictures from the party this weekend of those who I have their permission slips in.

Parent Permission

Hi parents,

I hope your child gave you the yellow permission slip for our blog. If not, here is a copy of it. Please fill out as soon as possible so I know your preferences!

Congrats to my homeroom for collecting 1790 Box Tops for the 1st semester! We were rewarded with a pizza and popsicle party. Mrs. Bouillion set it up for us and it was delicious. I'll post pictures once I have the permission slips in.

Today's Learning Objectives:

-Today, we caught up on checking old homeworks. We're continuing to work on finding the answers within the text. Make sure you are reenforcing at home!
-We also learned the difference between Fact and Opinion. I'll post the picture of our anchor chart later tonight or tomorrow.
-The morning class got to do their verb agreement activity but the afternoon class ran out of time. We'll get to it tomorrow!

We also copied down our homework. This week we will have the regular reading homework, home reader read/signed 2 times "Puppies," language arts homework (given tomorrow) and a spelling activity.

Tomorrow's Reminders:
We are going to pass out Valentine's tomorrow at 3:15. The children are allowed to bring valentines and/or individually wrapped candy but we cannot eat them at school. We will make bags tomorrow during class.

New Blog for Parents and Students!

Hi everyone,

With so much going on in our school year it's almost impossible to keep everyone updated. So we are going to try a blog! From here we can update what's going on and all those little events that we want to share with you. Hopefully this can help you get a better picture of what and how we are learning in our second grade language arts classroom!

Love,
Miss Alexander
